(the date of this post considering the content of the next)
More's to come, even though I've got tons to do over the next few weeks, school work has let up with the coming end of the quarter.
26 September 2009, 22:46 UTCPublic Incompleteness as Motivation
I believe that a potentially effective strategy for motivating yourself to complete something is to make it public, even in its most intermediate form. This is something github is fantastic for.
23 September 2009, 23:16 UTCOpen Functions
WIP, come back later.
As will become apparent by my future posts here, if they come into existence, I am very interested in Programming Language Design and Theory. I've been thinking about the issue on and off for quite a while, and one recurring theme in my last couple years of thought is 'open functions'.
22 August 2009, 4:47 UTCMet the Woz!
At San Jose's music in the park, July 30th. Apologies for the crappy cellphone photo, but at least a photography implement was at hand!
Had a nice little conversation about solid state disks, unfortunately cropped short because it was rather loud around that area, and I figured I'd let him be. Definitely a tick off my 'bucket list'.
20 August 2009, 4:46 UTCWhy, _why?
Today, _why the lucky stiff removed himself from the internet. This is quite a shame, as he had/has an excellent design sense, in all of his endeavors. From code, to music, to art, he brought cleverness and originality. I much enjoyed Why's (poignant) Guide to Ruby, and the accompanying music. Perhaps more importantly, it inspired others to create similarly whimsy filled tutorials.
As njh said "Hopefully he hasn't removed himself from the world...". I can only assume the worst.
However, I have been considering another possibility: it may have been an action designed to propel him into memetic immortality.
Now, don't jump on me all at once! (as if anyone is reading this, hah!). I don't mean to imply that he has some selfish desire for fame (not our pure and awesome _why!). Like the drug-related death of Bradley Nowell of Sublime, _why's sudden, controversial departure from the internet may serve to further expose his projects and efforts to the world. While the 'rockstar' label as applied to programmers is awful, here, it is potentially relevant.
It was certainly a planned takedown. Maybe even something he's anticipated for years, perhaps even an artistic statement. Maybe in a few years he will rise again under another pseudonym (this time as a haskeller! haha).
18 August 2009, 7:35 UTCNew Site/Blog
The site that used to be here was pretty old, and all just custom managed HTML. I've adopted pfh's minimalistic blog system, æther.
It does exactly what I need and nothing more. Since it's just a 2KLOC python file, it's open to infinite customization - not that I've needed to do that much. Almost all cases for customization can be handled by adding to a user python file or even just supplanting the default templates.
Anyway, I'm very impressed. Still need to get my css styles in shape, but I think I'll accumulate content first.
